I have noticed that some of my students are having trouble remembering to use articles a. an. and the. In front of most nouns you really need to use them in order for a sentence to sound natural. Here are some examples:

Let's go to movie.
Correction: Let's go to a movie. (Or Let's go to THE movie if you are talking about a specific movie.)

Would you like cookie?
Correction: Would you like a cookie?

I am reading book.
Correction: I am reading a book.

Of course we understand when you leave out the articles. but to a native English speaker's ears. the sentence still sounds incomplete when you forget them. So please keep this in mind when you are studying and are in class!!! Good luck! :)

A few common English idioms:

1)“…for nothing” = not without reason.

Ex. sentence: Its not called the Grand Canyon for nothing.

Explanation: The Grand Canyon is “grand” and therefore deserves its name.

2)“shape up” (shaping up)= “to develop into” or “to change into”

Ex. sentence: This is shaping up to be the best New Years ever.

Explanation: Something has happened to change the New Years holiday into something especially wonderful.

3)To “hash out” something= To talk about something in order to reach and agreement or compromise

Ex.sentence: The politicians hashed out their differences.

Explanation: Two or more politicians talked to one another with the goal of reaching an agreement or compromise about a disagreement.
