Hello everyone!

Brrrr………cold weather is heree! I hope you are ready to wear a big coat, scarf, and gloves–I know I am!

Although it’s not winter yet, it’s really getting cold out in Matsuyama.

In my hometown, we get quite a bit of snow starting around this time of year. If it snows enough,

we might get a snow day! Snow days are when schools and businesses close for the day so people don’t have to drive on the icy roads.

Snow plows shovel the roads so there’s huge piles of snow lining the streets.

Sometimes it’s hard to find your car when it’s covered in snow!

It’s so peaceful to watch the beautiful snow falling. It’s always nice to have a snow day to enjoy making a snowman, drinking hot cocoa, and staying warm. What would you do on a snow day?

I don’t like to venture out into the cold, but if there’s a daytime event going on and provided it’s a clear day, I force myself out of my warm home and go to it. This weekend there will be a 2-day event called “Sugoimonohaku” at Shiroyama Park. I rode past the park a couple of times on my way to work and more and more tents, as well as a stage has been set up. It looks like there will be more stalls than last year. There you can purchase gourmet foods and local products and you can see and experience traditional crafts there, too. Are you interested? I am!

日が沈む空を見上げていると、あることわざが頭をよぎりました。

“Every cloud has a silver lining.”

a silver lining 

直訳は「銀の裏地、内張り」ですが、

上のことわざでは「希望の光、（逆境の中にある）明るい兆し」といった意味でよく使用されます。

勘のいい皆さまは、何となく意味を推測できるかな

英語と触れる上で、完璧な理解が出来なくても、「こんな意味かな」と推測するのはとても大事なことです。

上の写真のように、雲の隙間から漏れる光のことを指してsilver lining と言います。

これを踏まえて、

“Every cloud has a silver lining.”とは、「どの雲にも隙間から漏れる光がある」

つまり、

どんなに困難な状況や悪いことにも必ず良いことがある、といった意味でしょうか。

ちなみに、このことわざはある映画で出てきた際に意味を調べて覚えました。

もちろん映画のインパクトも忘れられませんが、「何だろ？」と思って調べて頭に入れた言葉は、

いつまでも忘れずに記憶に残るものなんですね

Yesterday I was listening to some popular R&B songs from the ’90s that I liked as a young kid. One of the groups I listened to was TLC. I was a little surprised when I read how popular they were in Japan. I read on Wikipedia that TLC “became the first R&B group in history to receive Million certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ)” for their 1999 album FanMail. But then I remembered that Namie Amuro recorded with TLC in 2013 and their influence can be heard on many of Amuro-chan’s records after 2000. It was nice to make that connection and realise the influence TLC had on pop music in Japan.

Here’s one of their biggest hits and one of my favorites: “No Scrubs”.
